Physical problems for Checa at Donington. Canepa finishes eighth in race 2.
Donington Park (UK), Sunday 26 May 2013: the fifth round of the World Superbike championship took place today at Donington Park but for Team SBK Ducati Alstare, on track with three riders this weekend, it was a somewhat difficult day; while Canepa brought his 1199 Panigale home in eighth and thirteenth place, Badovini finished race one in eleventh position and Checa, after suffering with severe pain in his shoulder during race one (in which he finished twelfth), decided not to participate in the second race.
Race 1 – Warm and sunny conditions for race 1 today with temperatures of 15˚C and a track temperature of 26˚C. Starting from ninth on the grid, Canepa was eighth at the end of lap one, followed by Checa and Badovini, placed eleventh and twelfth. Towards mid-race Niccolo’ made a small mistake, going long, which relegated him to thirteenth place, immediately behind his two team-mates. Lapping at a similar pace to each other during the second half of the race, Ducati Alstare's three flag bearers were unable to close the gap that had opened ahead of them meaning that they crossed the finish line in eleventh (Badovini), twelfth (Checa) and thirteenth (Canepa) position.
Race 2 – Due to severe pain in his left shoulder both during and after race 1, Checa decided against riding in race 2.
The track temperature had increased to roughly 40˚C for race 2. At the end of the opening lap Canepa was in eleventh place, ahead of Badovini, twelfth, and immediately behind Cluzel. On lap seven Badovini unfortunately made a mistake that caused him to lose several positions. From that point on he started to push to make up lost ground but as he entered turn 2 he lost the front which sadly brought his race to a premature end, although fortunately the Italian rider was not hurt in the crash. Canepa, lapping with the same pace as Cluzel immediately ahead of him, finally got past the French rider on lap seventeen, moving into eighth place as a result. He managed the final part of the race well, keeping his closest rival firmly behind him to cross the line in final eighth position.
Carlos Checa: “Seeing how the first race went, and the pain that I had in my shoulder both during and after the race, we decided that it was best not to force things by participating in the second. To tell the truth I thought things might be worse today, at what is one of the most physical tracks but, having said that, I need more time to recuperate and get my strength back as I’m suffering particularly in the changes of direction and when entering left-hand turns, where it’s important to have both arms at 100%. Of course it’s not an injury that affects me in my day to day life but at 300km/h it really hurts. Now we have two weeks, in which I’ll continue with the various treatments in preparation for Portimao where I hope to be stronger. From the next round I’d like to be able to focus more on the sporting side of things and less on health issues.”
Ayrton Badovini: “In the first race I lost too much ground in the opening laps and after that there was no way to reach those ahead of me. I felt we made a good step between race 1 and race 2 – in the second I had similar pace to the group ahead of me but unfortunately I lost the front entering turn 2. I didn’t hurt myself but it was a pity because I wasn't doing badly. Now I want to continue with our work to better understand what works and what works less well, in order to make less mistakes during the weekend and to be faster in the next races.”
Niccolò Canepa: “Considering that these were my first races I’d say that we are coming out of this weekend with a fairly positive outlook. We’ve worked well and if we’d had more time on track on Friday then I think we could have done better. We’re not far off I don’t think, with a bit more time to set the bike up for me and my riding style we could probably have done more. I’m just sorry for the mistake in race 1 but these things can happen in racing. I’d like to thank Francis Batta, Ernesto Marinelli and the team for giving me this opportunity and thanks also to Ducati’s development team who’ve worked so hard for me this weekend.”

Problemi fisici per Checa a Donington. Ottavo posto per Canepa in gara 2
Donington Park (Regno Unito), domenica 26 maggio 2013: il quinto round del campionato Mondiale Superbike si e’ disputato oggi sul circuito inglese di Donington Park. Il team SBK Ducati Alstare, in pista con tre piloti questo weekend, ha vissuto un giorno di gare abbastanza difficile. Canepa ha portato la sua 1199 Panigale alla tredicesima ed ottava posizione, Badovini ha chiuso la prima gara in undicesima posizione, mentre Checa, soffrendo molto durante la prima manche a causa del problema persistente alla spalla, ha terminato gara 1 al dodicesimo posto ma ha poi deciso di non partecipare alla seconda manche.
Gara 1 – Buone condizioni meteo per la prima manche con una temperatura dell’aria di 15˚C e dell’asfalto a 26˚C). Partendo dalla nona posizione in griglia, Canepa era ottavo alla fine del primo giro, seguito da Checa e Badovini, 11esimo e 12 esimo. Verso meta’ gara Niccolo’ ha commesso un piccolo errore, arrivando lungo ad una curva. Un errore che lo ha relegato al 13esimo posto alle spalle dei suoi due compagni di squadra. Girando tutti e tre con un passo molto simile, i portacolori Ducati Alstare non hanno potuto chiudere il gap che si e’ aperto davanti a loro, ed hanno portato a casa le loro 1199 Panigale in undicesima (Badovini), dodicesima (Checa) e tredicesima (Canepa) posizione.
Gara 2 – Checa, ancora sofferente per i problemi fisici alla spalla, ha deciso di non partecipare alla seconda manche. La temperatura dell’asfalto e’ salita a circa 40˚C per la seconda gara. Alla fine del primo giro Canepa era undicesimo davanti a Badovini e dietro a Cluzel causa una partenza non troppo veloce. Alla settima tornata Badovini ha sbagliato, perdendo qualche posizione. Da quel punto in poi Ayrton ha cominciato a spingere forte per recuperare il terreno perduto, ma purtroppo mentre entrava nella curva n.2 ha perso l’anteriore, ed è caduto finendo purtroppo la sua gara, ma senza conseguenze fisiche per il pilota. Canepa girando con lo stesso passo di Cluzel, subito davanti a lui, e’ riuscito a sorpassarlo al 17esimo giro per prendere l’ottava posizione. Niccolò ha gestito bene l’ultima fase della gara, tenendo il pilota francese alle sue spalle, per tagliare il traguardo in ottava posizione finale.
Carlos Checa: “Visto com’e’ andata la prima manche, ed il dolore che ho avuto, abbiamo deciso insieme al team che era meglio non forzare per fare la seconda manche. A dire la verita’ mi aspettavo di peggio qui, una delle piste piu’ fisiche del calendario, ma detto questo ho bisogno di tempo per recuparare la forza, soprattuto nei cambi di direzione e nelle curve a sinistra, dove e’ importante avere due braccia al 100%. Ovviamente non e’ un’infortunio che mi limita nella vita normale, ma in moto a 300/ora sento molto dolore. Adesso abbiamo due settimane in cui continuero’ con gli stessi trattamenti in preparazione per Portimao dove spero di essere piu’ forte. Dal prossimo round vorrei essere in grado di focalizzarmi sul tema sportivo piuttosto che sul tema della salute.”
Ayrton Badovini: “Nella prima manche ho perso troppo terreno nei primi giri, dopodiche’ c’era troppo gap per poter raggiungere quelli subito davanti a me. Ho fatto un bel passo avanti fra la prima e la seconda manche, avevo un passo di gara uguale a quello del gruppo davanti a me, ma purtroppo ho perso l’anteriore nell’ ingresso della curva n.2. Fortunamente non mi sono fatto male ma e’ stato un peccato perche’ mi sentivo bene sulla moto. Adesso vogliamo continuare a lavorare per capire bene cosa funziona e cosa funziona meno, per fare meno errori durante il weekend ed essere piu’ veloci nelle prossime gare.”
Niccolò Canepa: “Per essere la mia prima gara direi che ne usciamo con un bilancio abbastanza positivo. Abbiamo fatto un buon lavoro e se avessimo avuto piu’ tempo per provare venerdi’ probabilmente il risultato sarebbe stato ancora migliore. Non siamo cosi’ lontani, con piu’ tempo per adattare la moto al mio stile di guida su questa pista, sarei andato meglio. Mi dispiace per l’errore nella prima manche, ma queste sono le corse alla fine. Ringrazio Francis Batta, Ernesto Marinelli e tutta la squadra per avermi dato l’opportunita’ di correre qui a Donington e ringrazio anche i ragazzi del team di sviluppo per il loro ottimo lavoro in questo weekend.”

Problemas físicos para Checa en Donington. Octavo puesto para Canepa en la segunda carrera
Donington Park (Reino Unido), domingo 26 de mayo 2013: el quinto round del campeonato Mundial de Superbike se ha disputado hoy sobre el circuito inglés de Donington Park. El Team SBK Ducati Alstare, este fin de semana con tres pilotos en pista, ha vivido un fin de semana bastante difícil. Canepa ha llevado su 1199 Panigale a la décimo tercera posición y a la octava en la segunda carrera. Badovini ha acabado la primera carrera en la décimo primera posición y Checa, sufriendo mucho durante la primera carrera a causa de su persistente problema en la espalda, ha terminado la primera carrera en la décimo segunda posición y luego ha decidido no participar en la segunda manga.
Primera carrera. Buenas condiciones meteorológicas en la primera carrera con una temperatura ambiente de 15º y 26º en el asfalto. Saliendo desde la novena posición de la parrilla de salida, Canepa era octavo tras la primera vuelta seguido de Checa y Badovini. A mitad de carrera Niccolò ha cometido un pequeño error, llegando largo a una curva. Un error que lo ha relegado a la décimo tercera posición tras sus compañeros de equipo.Girando los tres con un ritmo muy parecido, no han podido recortar la diferencia con respecto al grupo de delante y han acabado en la décimo primera posición (Badovini), décimo segunda (Checa) y décimo tercera (Canepa).
Segunda carrera. Checa, sufriendo todavía problemas con su espalda, ha decidido no salir en la segunda carrera. La temperatura del asfalto era cerca de 40º. Tras la primera vuelta Canepa era décimo primero delante de Badovini y detrás de Cluzel a causa de una salida no demasiado buena. En la séptima vuelta Badovini ha cometido un error perdiendo algunas posiciones. A partir de entonces ha comenzado a empujar fuerte para recuperar el terreno perdido pero cuando entraba en la segunda curva ha perdido el tren delantero y ha sufrido una caída sin consecuencias físicas para el piloto. Canepa, girando al mismo ritmo que Cluzel, ha conseguido superar al piloto francés en la décimo séptima vuelta para luchar por la octava posición. Niccolò ha gestionado bien la última fase de la carrera teniendo a Cluzel a sus espaldas para cruzar la meta en la octava posición.
Carlos Checa: “Visto como ha ido la primera carrera y el dolor que he tenido, hemos decidido junto con el equipo que era mejor no forzar por hacer la segunda carrera. La verdad es que me esperaba que estaría peor en una de las pistas más físicas del calendario, pero dicho esto necesito tiempo para recuperar fuerza sobre todo en los cambios de dirección y la curvas de izquierdas donde es importante tener los dos brazos al 100%. Obviamente no es un infortunio que me limita en la vida normal pero en moto a 300 kilómetros por hora siento mucho dolor. Ahora tengo dos semanas donde continuaré con el mismo tratamiento para prepararme para Portimao donde espero estar más fuerte. Quiero estar en posición de focalizar sobre el tema deportivo más que con el tema de mi salud”.
Ayrton Badovini: “En la primera carrera he perdido demasiado terreno en las primeras vueltas y tenía a mi predecesor demasiado lejos. En la segunda he tenido un buen paso igual al del grupo de delante, pero he perdido el el tren delantero en la segunda curva. Afortunadamente no me he hecho daño pero ha sido una lástima porque me sentía bien sobre la moto. Ahora queremos continuar trabajando para comprender bien lo que funciona y lo que no funciona para hacer menos errores durante el fin de semana y ser más rápidos en las próximas carreras”.
Niccolò Canepa: “Por ser mi primera carrera puedo decir que nos vamos con un balance bastante positivo. Hemos hecho un buen trabajo y si hubiéramos tenido más tiempo para probar el viernes, probablemente el resultado hubiese sido aún mejor. No hemos estado muy lejos, con más tiempo para adaptar la moto a mi estilo de conducción en esta pista, hubiese sido todo mejor. Me sabe mal el error de la primera carrera, pero al fin y al cabo así son las carreras. Agradezco a Francis Batta, Ernesto Marinelli y todo el equipo haberme dado esta oportunidad de correr en Donington y agradezco a los chicos del equipo de e desarrollo su óptimo trabajo durante el fin de semana”.

Gesundheitliche Probleme für Ducati Alstare-Pilot Checa. Platz acht für Canepa im zweiten Rennen von Donington
Donington Park/Großbritannien, Sonntag, 26. Mai 2013 – Das fünfte Rennwochenende der Superbike-Weltmeisterschaft fand bei sonnigem Wetter auf der britischen Rennstrecke Donington Park statt. Das Team SBK Ducati Alstare war mit drei Fahrern am Start und erlebte einen schwierigen Renntag. Niccolò Canepa, der dritte Mann im Bund, kam auf seiner Panigale 1199 R auf den Plätzen acht und 13 ins Ziel. Ayrton Badovini holte im ersten Rennen als Elfter WM-Punkte, während Carlos Checa auf Platz zwölf landete. Weil er während des Rennens starke Schmerzen in seiner verletzten Schulter bekam, verzichtete Checa auf den Start im zweiten Lauf.
Rennen 1: Für das erste Rennen fanden die Fahrer warme und sonnige Bedingungen bei 15 Grad Celsius Luft- und 26 Grad Streckentemperatur vor. Von Platz neun aus gestartet, lag Canepa nach der ersten Runde auf Rang acht, gefolgt von Checa und Badovini auf den Plätzen elf und zwölf. Etwa bei Rennmitte machte Canepa einen Fehler und musste eine weite Linie fahren, was ihn hinter seine Teamkollegen Checa und Badovini auf die 13. Position zurückwarf. Von diesem Zeitpunkt an fuhren die drei offiziellen Piloten des Team SBK Ducati Alstare ungefähr gleich schnelle Rundenzeiten, konnten aber den Rückstand auf die vor ihnen fahrenden Konkurrenten nicht verringern. Am Ende des Rennens wurden sie auf den Plätzen elf (Badovini), zwölf (Checa) und 13 (Canepa) abgewinkt.
Rennen 2: Wegen der starken Schmerzen in seiner Schulter, die sich während des ersten Rennens eingestellt hatten, entschied sich Carlos Checa gegen die Teilnahme am zweiten Lauf des Tages.
Die Asphalttemperatur war zwischenzeitlich auf 40 Grad angestiegen. Nach der Startrunde fuhr Canepa als Elfter vor Badovini auf Rang zwölf hinter Jules Cluzel. In der siebten Runde unterlief Badovini ein Fehler, der ihn etliche Positionen kostete. Beim Versuch, mehr Druck zu machen und den Schaden zu begrenzen, rutschte ihm in Kurve zwei das Vorderrad weg, was sein Rennen vorzeitig beendete. Glücklicherweise wurde der Italiener bei dem Sturz nicht verletzt. Canepa konnte unterdessen dieselben Rundenzeiten wie vor ihm Cluzel fahren und den Franzosen schließlich in der 17. Runde überholen. Damit hatte er Platz acht erobert, den er bis ins Ziel gegen seine Widersacher verteidigte.
Carlos Checa:
„Nachdem ich gesehen hatte, wie das erste Rennen gelaufen war, und mit den Schmerzen in meiner Schulter, hielt ich es für das Beste, nichts erzwingen zu wollen und habe auf den Start beim zweiten Rennen verzichtet. Eigentlich hatte ich befürchtet, dass es für mich auf dieser körperlich anspruchsvollen Strecke noch viel schwieriger werden wird. Aber es ist klar geworden, dass ich noch mehr Zeit brauche, um wieder meine ganze Kraft zurückzubekommen. Schmerzen habe ich besonders bei Richtungswechseln und beim Einbiegen in Linkskurven, wo es wichtig ist, dass beide Arme 100prozentig funktionieren. Die Verletzung ist nicht so, dass sie mich im Alltag behindern würde, aber bei 300 km/h tut es richtig weh. Jetzt haben wir zwei Wochen Zeit für die Vorbereitungen auf Portimão, wo ich dann hoffentlich stärker bin und mich wieder mehr mit sportlichen als mit gesundheitlichen Themen befassen kann.“
Ayrton Badovini:
„Im ersten Rennen habe ich am Anfang zu viel verloren, und danach hatte ich keine Möglichkeit mehr, an die Kollegen vor mir heranzufahren. Zwischen Rennen eins und zwei haben wir meiner Meinung nach einen guten Schritt nach vorn gemacht. Ich konnte so schnell fahren wie die Konkurrenten vor mir, aber dann habe ich unglücklicherweise in Kurve zwei das Vorderrad verloren. Ich habe mich zwar nicht verletzt, aber es war schade, weil ich gut unterwegs war. Jetzt will ich mich wieder auf mein Arbeit konzentrieren und zu verstehen lernen, was funktioniert und was nicht. Damit ich weniger Fehler mache und bei den nächsten Rennen noch schneller bin.“
Niccolò Canepa:
„Das waren meine ersten Rennen in diesem Jahr, und ich würde sagen, dafür haben wir uns ganz gut aus der Affäre gezogen. Wir haben gut gearbeitet, und wenn ich am Freitag etwas mehr Zeit zum Trainieren gehabt hätte, wäre es vielleicht noch besser gegangen. Wir sind ganz gut dabei, und mit etwas mehr Zeit dafür, das Motorrad für mich und meinen Fahrstil abzustimmen, wäre vielleicht mehr drin gewesen. Mein Fehler im ersten Rennen tut mir leid, aber so etwas kann beim Rennen eben passieren. Ich möchte Francis Batta und Ernesto Marinelli dafür danken, dass sie mir diese Chance gegeben haben. Vielen Dank auch an das Ducati-Entwicklungsteam, das an diesem Wochenende wirklich hart für mich gearbeitet hat.“
